Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I WATCH BUNCH OF AMATEURS?

You can watch Bunch of Amateurs for free on YouTube, or you can pay us to watch extended episodes released in advance, plus behind-the-scenes content. Scroll down the page to find a tier that suits you.

WHEN DO THE EPISODES COME OUT?

Starting in the 24/25 season, we are releasing episodes much closer to the matches. We are aiming to release on BoA+ within two weeks of the shoot, and a week later than that for free on YouTube.

WHY DID YOU START CHARGING TO WATCH THE SHOW?

After several years of making the show we realised that YouTube really doesn’t like old-fashioned TV shows. And with us showing 40-60 minute episodes that don’t pander to the YouTube algorithm, we were failing to get our ad revenue up high enough to make the show viable. So we decided to try and do the best of both worlds - we made our free episodes shorter, and did the stuff that YouTube tells us to do (make the opening 10 seconds a hook, cut off the end when the viewing rate drops etc.). But we also decided that, for those people who want to watch the full, uncut episodes, we would put them on Patreon and YouTube Memberships where the viewing stats are not an issue and ad revenue becomes irrelevant. And the memberships revenue is crucial to us being able to make the show that we want to make, and hopefully, that you want to watch. Even though the production costs are 1/10th of a BBC documentary (such as Squad Goals), without members there wouldn’t be a show.

SHOULD I SIGN UP TO YOUTUBE OR PATREON?

We prefer Patreon as they are far more interested in supporting content creators, and nowhere near as greedy as Google (who own YouTube). But we’re honestly just happy to have you on board so whatever works for you is fine with us! It’s a bit easier to watch content on your TV if you sign up on YouTube. Google take 30% of whatever you pay for BoA, which is more than Patreon. So we like Patreon more. They seem like good people.

WHY ARE THE PRICES DIFFERENT?

Patreon allows us to set any price. YouTube, for reasons known only to them, sets prices arbitrarily, and we select the one closest to the price we want.

Patreon does add VAT on top of whatever price we set, so look out for that.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FREE, STANDARD AND SUPERCUTS?

We start off making a Supercut. That can be anywhere from 50 minutes up to 90 minutes, and occasionally even longer. This is the definitive version of every episode. Then we make a shorter cut, usually about 40 minutes long. This is a tighter edit and will cut out some of the funnier stuff. It’s probably what we would have to do if Netflix ever bought the show!

After that, we chop the episode right down so that it suits the YouTube algorithm. usually about 25 minutes long. We don’t like doing that, as it means we skip team talks and interviews - and we want people to enjoy the longer versions.

WHY DO YOU TELL US NOT TO SIGN UP USING AN iPHONE?

Just to be clear - WE DO NOT RECOMMEND SIGNING UP TO PATREON OR YOUTUBE MEMBERSHIPS ON APPLE DEVICES SUCH AS iPHONES or IPADS. Instead, use your computer/ laptop/ desktop or any non-Apple mobile device.

This is because any app that is downloaded through the App Store has to pay a levy on purchases made through that app. And Google (who own YouTube) have decided to pass that cost on to you, while Patreon have told us to charge you more. So if we charge £3 for membership a month, YouTube will charge you £4 and keep the extra pound (on top of the 30% they take from the £3! The cheeky gits). To their credit, neither YouTube or Patreon are fans of Apple’s tax, but the difference is, Patreon lets us choose what to charge while Google put prices up by up to 40% and keep a chunk of it.

Anyway, that’s enough about that stuff - see the tiers below and see which one suits you!

CAN YOU COME AND FILM MY TEAM?

Probably not! If you throw enough money at us we’d film anything, but right now we’re focused on Dorking Wanderers, and have a pretty good idea of what we’re filming next. And there’s not enough money in non-league for us to come up with a more inclusive business model. We do massively appreciate it when people ask us to shoot their clubs, and we wish we had the budget to do something with all of them.

CAN YOU HELP ME FIGURE OUT HOW TO SHOOT MY TEAM?

The best way to learn about what we do is to become a member and see the behind the scenes stuff. We’re pretty open about how it works, and if you’re on Patreon, you can DM us to ask questions. If you contact us through Twitter or whatever then we will try and reply but we get so many messages we don’t always get around to responding. We do try though!

CAN MARC COME AND MANAGE MY TEAM FOR A DAY?

If you watch the show I think you can probably imagine the combination of words he uses when I mention these requests.
